Updated (8/7/09): Repaired graphic links.

Although I’m a fan of movies, I’m definitely not a fan of paying $20 or whatever the going price for theater tickets are these days.

With big flat screen TV’s being affordable (thanks Costco!) and DVD’s being released more quickly after a movie’s release, what’s the sense in shelling out all the money? Apparently, many people shell it out… 2007 was a good year for movies.

I found this interactive information visualization, The Ebb and Flow of Movies: Box Office Receipts 1986-2007 at Visual Methods.

… a variation of a stacked graph showing the box office earnings of many of the major Hollywood movies released in the last 20 years.

I like how links to movie reviews are also embedded into the visualization… I had to be reminded the plot of 1997’s Flubber. Which brings up another question…. How did Flubber make that much money!?!?!?

There are lots of interesting trends to discover in here, as the stacked graph is pretty good at illustrating “outliers” in the data. Even better, it is a very striking design that encourages you to explore it.
