Proverbidioms Proverbidioms

Proverbidioms by T.E. Breitenbach is one of my favorite paintings. I have had it as a poster for years. One day I hope to see it in person.

It demonstrates pictorially over 300 literal interpretations of common proverbs and idioms.

I have to admit that my favorite is “You are what you eat.” Notice that the figure also has “Cauliflower Ear” and a “Banana Nose” Do you notice the “Lemondrop”?

I’m also partial to the guy floating in the river who has “fear written all over his face.”

I have probably spent hours looking at this poster.

It always makes me think about what my writing would mean if taken literally. Communication relies so heavily on the filter of the receiver.

Check out Brietenbach’s other work here.
