In Dec. of 2006, the NY Times published an article on a visualization that displays interconnectedness between multiple factors involved in significant terrorist events.
These images represent terrorist attacks and some of the actors, weapons and targets linked to them. The physical relationship of the items suggests the level of connection.
The illustrations, created in Processing, are the result of a physics-based model of keywords connected by springs. The strength of the virtual spring connecting a pair of keywords together is dependent upon their rate of co-occurrence on the Internet, a measure of their degree of relationship to each other.
While this article was published in 2006, making it rather old news. The interactive version of the open-source spying data visualization is now available online.
