The second visualization I found on The World Almanac 2007 was a Mammal SuperTree. The supertree method is an approach to building large phylogenetic trees from patchy data. Loosely speaking, the visualization is effective for depicting complex hierarchies and taxonomies. This data set is huge. See below for two magnified views of the image segment containing homo sapians.
A PDF version of this image is available for download here.
The effective ability to visualize this data led scientists to rethink their existing models.
The extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago had little effect on the evolution of mammals, according to a study in the journal Nature.
One theory had suggested the rise of the mammals was directly linked to the disappearance of the dinosaurs.
The evidence challenging the connection comes from the most complete family tree compiled for mammals.
