I tend to be more intrigued with front-end visual design than the complexities of how such beautifully visual results get there. So, while I am certain there were years of research and development that went into this award winning design, I’m just really excited about the finished product!!

I love seeing ‘futuristic’ concepts that I saw in movies decades ago (think Star Wars) finally become a reality.

The Interactive 360 degree Light Field Display (3D Display) was demonstrated at SIGGRAPH 2007, and won an award for “Best Emerging Technology.

CG has transformed many aspects of life. But while a great deal of imagery is modeled and rendered in 3D, almost all of it is shown on a 2D display such as a computer monitor, movie screen, or television.
Researchers at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) along with their collaborators have devised a reproducible, low-cost 3D display system that requires no special glasses, and is viewable from all angles by multiple users.

When I think about how I could use such a new technology I can’t come up with too many scenarios, but when I start thinking about some other professions I begin to see a great potential value.

Is this a useful and impactful way of presenting information or is it just a cool visual gadget to look at and say, cool?
