Information Aesthetics is a daily read for me. Below are several of my favorite posts in the last several weeks:
- They Might Be Giants: Periodic Table Infographic (Music) Video.
This post features an infographic music video made by the group They Might Be Giants. The video is effective, cute, and catchy. It reminds me a little bit of the old School House Rock videos, where music and lyrics teach a particular subject.
- DIY Visualization of Local Open Government Budget Data.
A link to a great post showing how to use visualizations to answer a question. The visualization’s author wanted to investigate the question, “How do cuts to Arts & Culture funding stack up against cuts in other government business areas in British Columbia?” The author steps through his process of investigating this data set. Nice text along with great visualizations. Near the end of the article, the author states, “When we visualize data we often get a chance to see patterns or anomalies that we might not otherwise notice.” Good read.
- On the Origin of Species: The Preservation of Darwin’s Favored Traces.
An amazing Ben Fry visualization of the evolution of Darwin’s famous work. The book went through six revisions over Darwin’s lifetime, and the visualization shows how the text changed with each edition. It is an amazing study in how Darwin’s theory itself was amplified, modified, and rewritten as the scientist’s ideas evolved.
- show-me: Water Consumption in the Shower at a Glance.
Summary of an interesting paper that uses visualization of actual water consumption while showering to impact behavior.
- DataMasher: Visualize and Share data.gov Data.
A visualization of one of the contenders for the Apps for America 2 contest.
- DataSF.org and SF Crimespotting: San Francisco City Opening its Data.
Map-Based Visualization of Crime in San Francisco.
