BusinessWeek generally has extremely nice data presentations. On July 23, 2009, BusinessWeek published In Most Markets, a Few Health Insurers Dominate. It is an interesting read. Below is a nice infographic from the article.

  • NOTE: Market shares are for the combined HMO+PPO product market.
  • Data are from 2006 except for Miss. and Pa., which are from 2002-2003
  • Data: American Medical Assn., Competition in Health Insurance: A Comprehensive Study of U.S. Markets, 2008 update; James C. Robinson, “Consolidation and the Transformation of Competition in Health Insurance,” Health Affairs, November/December 2004; Douglas McCarthy et al, “The North Dakota Experience: Achieving High-Performance Health Care Through Rural Innovation and Cooperation,” The Commonwealth Fund, May 2008

Several facts jump out at me:

  • I’m amazed at the number of states with two providers commanding greater than 75% market share between them
  • There are few states where the two market leaders together have less than 50%
  • Obviously, most states have two big players that control 50-75% of the market

I think the infographic is well done for the point it is trying to make.

I found the graphic confusing. The map colors states based on share of top 2 carriers but the table calls out the top provider in some states. Is the table complete? Why is the table cutoff seemingly 75% but the map at 80%?

Yes the competitive landscape is non-existent, but the graphic could be much better.
