Found at GOOD Magazine: An enlightening collaboration between GOOD and Atley G. Kasky gives us a high level view of who’s winning the e-mail wars.

The chirping sounds of a modem and the pleasant greeting of “You’ve got mail,” are technological touchstones for people raised in the exciting days of home dial-up internet. But over the years, AOL’s near-monopoly on personal email accounts has been broken. Or has it? GOOD’s latest ‘Transparency’ looks at which email services are attracting the most users.

GOOD - E-mail wars

Personally, I have Gmail, Yahoo, and MSN accounts… but haven’t used any except Gmail in years. I’m surprised to see that Yahoo has such a commanding lead. Who uses Yahoo for e-mail anymore? Or am I just dense and everyone uses Yahoo? Why does this seem to bother me so much?

Like you, I have an account on Yahoo but mostly use it as a spam catcher (like when you have to provide an e-mail account to register for some site). All of my personal mail is through Gmail and I can’t understand why anyone would use anything else.

Weird. I haven’t used anything but gmail in years, and nearly all of my contacts are on gmail as well.

John, you read my mind. I couldn’t do without my ‘fallback’ e-mail account at hotmail and yahoo that i use whenever places like my Gym, Blockbuster, Verizon, or online merchants ask for an e-mail address.
Even though Gmail has a decent spam catcher, there would be too much noise in my inbox without using my yahoo/hotmail as a virtual dumpster.
perfect example: I even used my yahoo account when posting this comment!

i still use yahoo and use gmail as my secondary email. gmail is the better client and i’d like to move everything there but it’s quite a process – i have so many things pointing to my yahoo account that moving would be a real pain. that said, i use thunderbird as my email client so i can import emails from both addresses. that’s the way to go, sonnnnn.

Hey Nathan, congratulations on the new job! My workplace frowns on spending time updating the blog too, so I feel your pain.

I have gmail, yahoo, me.com and corporate email accounts. I use gmail and yahoo about 50/50 for most of my personal email. My wife uses Yahoo exclusively, and doesn’t understand why people like gmail. My parents use AOL exclusively (I can’t seem to break them of the habit).

It’s been said before but “Why is Gmail still in BETA?!?” Really?

one of the main reasons Gmail users don’t close their Yahoo or Hotmail accounts is the spam-catching issue.

many of them don’t realize how *easy* it is to set up a filter in Gmail that will automatically archive all the “spammy” mail they receive on a regular basis.

While watching March Madness over the weekend it dawned on me another reason why yahoo would have such a commanding lead… Fantasy Sports.
I definitely use yahoo for my fantasy sports fix and an e-mail account is required.
But for e-mail purposes alone?… still just a glorified spam catcher (which as mentioned earlier, still invaluable)

At first moving my contacts to Gmail seemed like a real pain, but over the years, all the stuff that started piling up in my Yahoo account, as a result of the fact that I was using it for every little thing, became an even bigger problem.
I do have a lot of mail from Groups, and Gmail makes reading replies to one thread so much easier than Yahoo. I would go insane if I had to go through those thousands of emails every month with Yahoo.
Like other people that posted on your thread, I now just use Yahoo for registering in all sorts of places or to create certain online accounts.
I hardly ever take the bother to read my Yahoo mail anymore.
