Projet AWOL - Visualizing and Manipulating Surround Sound

November 9th, 2007 | by Nathan |

I was checking out the website for the USC Interactive Media Division and found an innovative tool that not only uses visualization to offer insight through new and interesting visual perspectives, but offers the ability to simultaneously manipulate sound properties.

Vincent Diamante’s MFA thesis, Project AWOL is a new interface for audio mixing in surround sound.

Take some time to look at Vincent Diamante’s full thesis paper.

In Project AWOL, Vincent Diamante has used a touch screen and stylus to make the visualization of musical space easy to understand and easy to manipulate. With a sweep of a pen, a user can place a specific sound exactly where they want it, and even plot its movement through the course of the track.

Watch this video of Project AWOL in action to get a better idea of it’s functionality:

Through this intuitive interface, Project AWOL greatly increases the accessibility of surround sound development without sacrificing the depth of traditional sound mixing equipment.
