Excellent Data Warehouse Books
July 1st, 2006 | by Neal Levene |There are a large number of excellent data warehousing books out on the market. Among the ones I find the best are:
1. The Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit by Ralph Kimball
Kimball shows practical details involved in planning, designing, developing, deploying, and growing data warehouses. Excellent for the technical practioner.
2. The Data Warehouse Toolkit by Ralph Kimball
Kimball shows how to use dimensional modeling to design effective and usable data warehouses. This is his earlier book. I find that this book is really good for the less technical business reader to understand data warehousing.
3. Improving Data Warehouse and Business Information Quality by Larry English
This is one of my favorite books on data quality. Just excellent.
4. Corporate Information Factory by Bill Inmon
I don’t find Inmon as useful as Kimball, but I like the ideas in this book. The book talks about a method for connecting legacy systems with a data warehouse. Web access mechanisms, e-commerce systems, ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems are discussed. The book also looks closely at exploration and data mining servers for analyzing customer behavior and departmental data marts for finance, sales, and marketing.
